Kate’s story

My name is Jonathan Korman. In 2024, my mother Kate Korman was living in the retirement community Sun City West outside Phoenix, Arizona.

That May, she had an overdue balance of $423 with Arizona Public Service, so shortly after her 82nd birthday they cut off her electricity. Temperatures were in the 90s and climbing. Without air conditioning, the heat killed her, probably within a day.

I took this as a tragic mistake at the time, but the following year I learned that leaving people to die in the heat is APS policy. My mother was not the first to suffer from their neglect, but I want her to be the last.

So I am telling her story.
